2022 Joint Seminar at Ozu, September 7–8, 2022

The Joint Seminar for UGAS-EU students was held in Ozu, September 7–8, 2022.

The Joint Seminar, a required subject for UGAS-EU students, is usually a three-day residential seminar conducted in English. In 2020 and 2021, the Joint Seminar was held online due to the pandemic, but this time, for the first time in three years, it was held onsite over two days and one night. The seminar included a lecture and group work to help students advance their research, and provided a forum for exchange between international students from the constituent universities, Japanese students, and faculty members.

The first day of the seminar began with an orientation followed by self-introductions and a lecture by Professor Dennis Murphy on getting a scientific paper published. Students then proceeded with group work in their assigned groups, supported by their group advisor.

On the second day, the group presentations were held in which the students presented the results of the discussion of their specified topics and related SDGs. All the groups summed up their findings very well and gave enthusiastic presentations in an active collaboration between international and Japanese students.

At the completion ceremony, Professor Hiroki Oue, Dean of the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, in his closing remarks, said, “The experience of studying together over two days and one night outside of your respective universities and the comprehensive issues you tackled, which are different from your usual research, will be useful for future research activities”.

The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences will continue to support research activities by providing opportunities for such co-curricular activities between Japanese and international students.
