Winning comment from Takashi Momiyama

Hello, I’m Takashi Momiyama. I’ve been researching seismic retrofitting technology for pond embankments under the supervision of Professor Tadashi Hara at Kochi University. I attended the 53rd Japan National Conference on Geotechnical Engineering and received the award for outstanding presentation. I feel honored to receive this prize, and I appreciate everyone’s support for my research activities.

?Recently, the embankments of many reservoirs, which accumulate water for agriculture, have broken due to earthquakes and flooding, notably the major damage caused by torrential rain in west Japan in July. I am investigating the use of steel sheet piles to reinforce embankments. In my presentation, I talked about the results of how the water in reservoirs affects the liquefaction behavior and amount of settlement when a big earthquake occurs. It was a great opportunity to participate in this conference and to get a lot of questions and opinions from others.

?I enrolled in UGAS as a working PhD student from Chiba Prefecture. On busy days, we just focus on handling short-term time and work, but I would like to keep focusing on protecting people from disasters and trying my best to continue the research.
